Oral Pathology in Houston, TX

When you think about a dental checkup, you probably picture your teeth. But your tongue, cheeks, gums, lips, and the roof and floor of your mouth can change too, and those changes don’t always hurt. At New Smiles Dental Implant Center, we offer oral pathology services in Houston, TX. It starts with a careful look at your whole mouth during your exam, and an honest conversation if we see something worth a closer look.

Oral Pathology

What Is Oral Pathology?

Oral pathology is the study of diseases that affect the mouth, jaws, and surrounding tissues. In practical terms, it means noticing something unusual (a sore, patch, or lump), working out what it might be and deciding whether to watch it, treat it, or test it.

Many of these changes can be serious, which is why we look at them in person. A sharp tooth edge, a bitten cheek, or an ill-fitting denture can all cause irritation. Others need more attention. The challenge is that you often can’t tell the difference by how something looks or feels, which is why a professional exam matters.

What We Look at During Your Exam

Oral cancer screening is part of our general dentistry care, alongside dental exams and digital X-rays. A screening generally involves looking at and feeling the soft tissues of your mouth, not just your teeth. We’re checking for changes in color, texture, or shape, and for areas that feel different from the tissue around them.

You usually don’t need to prepare. If you’ve noticed something unusual, tell us at the start of your visit so we can look at it first. A screening can flag something worth a closer look, but it isn’t a diagnosis.

Changes Worth Getting Checked Call us if you notice any of these:

Lumineers are a cosmetic treatment, and they tend to work best for:

A sore that hasn’t healed after about two weeks

A white or red patch that doesn’t go away

A lump or thickened area in your mouth or cheek

Ongoing pain or tenderness in one spot

Trouble chewing, swallowing, or moving your tongue

Having one of these doesn’t mean something serious is going on. It means it’s worth having it evaluated.

Why Regular Screenings Matter

Early changes often don’t cause pain, so they’re easy to miss. Some changes, including certain HPV-related cancers, tend to show up on the back of the tongue or the tonsils, where they’re hard to see on your own.

Catching a change sooner generally gives you and your care team more options. That’s not a promise about any particular outcome. It’s the reason we don’t skip the soft-tissue check.

Who Should Pay Extra Attention?

Some factors are linked to a higher risk of oral cancer, including tobacco use (smoking or chewing), heavy alcohol use, and HPV infection. Anyone can develop oral changes, though, including people with none of these factors. If you aren’t sure where you stand, ask us at your next visit.

What Happens if We Detect Something?

If something looks unusual, here’s how it typically goes:

We Go Through Our Findings. We point out what we’re seeing and what the possibilities are, without jumping to conclusions.

We May Recommend Watching It. If irritation seems likely, we may ask you to come back in a couple of weeks to see if it heals.

We May Recommend More Testing. If it doesn’t resolve or looks concerning, the next step may be a biopsy, where a small tissue sample is examined under a microscope to find out what’s going on.

We Explain the Next Steps. If more testing is needed, we’ll walk you through what it involves and who will handle it, and we’ll answer your questions before anything moves forward.

A finding that involves a tooth, your gums, or your jaw can often be handled within the same team.

A Quick Monthly Self-Check

You’re the one who sees your mouth every day, so you’re often the first to notice a change. Once a month, stand in front of a mirror with good light and look at:

Your lips and the insides of your cheeks

The top, sides, and underside of your tongue

The roof and floor of your mouth

Your gums

This doesn’t replace a professional exam, but it can help you notice changes between visits. If you see something new, take a quick photo so you can compare later. If it’s still there after two weeks, call us.

Why Choose Us for Oral Pathology Care in Houston, TX

We are an independent, privately owned practice, opened in 2012 by Dr. Myoung Hwang and Dr. Anh Pham. Treatment decisions come from the doctors, not a management company. We’re a multidisciplinary group, so general dentistry, periodontal care, oral surgery, and restorative work are all under one roof.

Our dentists pursue continuing education, and our team holds memberships in the American Dental Association and the Texas Dental Association. We built our offices to feel comfortable rather than clinical.
