Porcelain Inlays and Onlays in Houston, TX

You have a tooth that needs more support than a regular filling can provide, but may not require a full crown. Inlays and onlays can be an option for restoring teeth with moderate damage. At New Smiles Dental Implant Center, we offer porcelain inlays and onlays in Houston, TX. These custom porcelain restorations help rebuild the damaged part of your tooth and preserve the healthy part.

Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

What Are Porcelain Inlays and Onlays?

Think of them as a step between a dental filling and a crown. An inlay sits inside the chewing surface of your tooth, between the cusps (the little peaks). An onlay does the same job but also covers one or more cusps. Both are made outside your mouth from porcelain, shaped to fit your tooth, and bonded in place.

A traditional filling is packed in while it’s soft and hardens in the tooth. A porcelain restoration is made to match your tooth’s shape before it’s placed, which allows precise contours and a durable repair. That makes it a good choice for molars, which take the most force every time you chew.

Why Not Just Get a Crown?

A crown requires removing a significant amount of natural tooth structure all the way around, and enamel doesn’t grow back.

With an inlay or onlay, we remove the decayed or damaged area and preserve as much healthy tooth as possible. Preserving natural tooth structure is a core goal of conservative dentistry, because it helps maintain the tooth’s strength over time. Here’s how the three options compare:

Filling: Typically used for small cavities. It can weaken a tooth when used to patch larger areas.

AvoidInlay/onlay: Typically used for moderate damage. It’s strong, made to fit your tooth, and keeps most of your tooth.

Crown: Typically used for a severely damaged tooth, or one with a crack too large for an onlay.ing gum and very chewy foods

When Do You Need One?

We usually recommend inlays or onlays when you have:

An old, large filling that’s cracked, worn, or leaking

A cracked or chipped tooth where the damage hasn’t reached the root

A back tooth with decay that’s too large for a filling

Tooth damage from grinding that needs rebuilding

If you feel a sharp pain or sensitivity when you bite down, or food keeps catching in one spot, come in and let us look. Early treatment often allows for a more conservative repair.

Why Choose Porcelain?

Gold, composite, porcelain: there are several materials to choose from. Here’s why we choose porcelain when a tooth needs more than a filling.

It Looks Like a Real Tooth. Porcelain can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth, so the repair blends in with your smile. That’s a noticeable difference from amalgam restorations.

It Generally Resists Staining. A glazed porcelain surface resists staining from coffee, tea, and red wine better than many composite materials.

It Supports Gum Health. A smooth, well-polished surface and a precise fit can help keep plaque from building up around the restoration.

It Holds Up Well. Porcelain handles everyday chewing well, and a bonded restoration can help support the remaining tooth. Ceramic inlays and onlays have a strong track record, and with good care, they can last many years. Like any material, porcelain can chip or fracture under heavy force, such as from grinding, so how long yours lasts depends on the size of the restoration, your bite, and your habits.

What to Expect

We explain each step so you know what to expect.

Exam and X-rays. We look at the tooth, take digital X-rays, and give you an honest recommendation on whether an inlay or onlay makes sense or whether a different option fits better. If a filling would do the job, we’ll say so.

Prepping the Tooth. After numbing the area, we remove the decay or old filling and shape the tooth to receive the restoration. We’ll do everything we can to keep you comfortable. If dental visits make you nervous, just tell us. We move at a pace that works for you.

Making the Restoration. We take an impression or digital scan of your tooth, and your porcelain piece is crafted to match its shape and shade. A temporary restoration protects the tooth until your next visit.

Bonding It in Place. At your follow-up visit, we check the fit and color, make any small adjustments, and bond the restoration permanently. Then we polish it and check your bite.

Once the numbness wears off, you can usually eat normally. We’ll tell you what to avoid for the first day or so. Some temporary sensitivity to hot and cold is common. If it lingers, call us.

Taking Care of Your Restoration

The aftercare is simple:

Brush twice a day and floss daily, including around the restored tooth

Keep up with your cleanings and checkups

Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth (we make custom ones)

Don’t use your teeth to open packages or crack ice

Porcelain restorations are durable, but the natural tooth underneath can still develop decay, so good hygiene matters.

Why Houston Patients Choose New Smiles Dental Implant Center

We are an independent, privately owned practice. Dr. Myoung Hwang and Dr. Anh Pham started the practice in 2012, and the doctors make the treatment decisions, not a corporate office. Our team handles restorative, cosmetic, and surgical care under one roof, so in most cases you can usually continue your care with the same team.

We tell you what treatment costs before we begin, accept most PPO plans, and check your coverage ahead of time so there are fewer surprises. If you don’t have insurance, we work with CareCredit and Cherry and offer an in-house membership plan.

You can visit us on Bellaire Blvd or near the Galleria on Chimney Rock Rd, and we see patients from Bellaire, Alief, Westchase, Sharpstown, Chinatown, Uptown, and River Oaks. Hablamos español, too: we offer care in both English and Spanish.
