What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental issue needs emergency care. But some things can't wait for a regular appointment. Here's what qualifies:

A toothache that's severe enough to disrupt your day

A knocked-out tooth that needs to be replanted quickly

A cracked, fractured, or broken tooth

A tooth that's been pushed out of position or loosened by an impact

Uncontrollable bleeding from the mouth

Swelling in your jaw, face, or gums that's getting worse

A dental abscess with pain, swelling, or a bad taste in your mouth

A broken crown, bridge, or other dental restoration

An injury to your lips, tongue, or soft tissue inside your mouth

If you're unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us. We'd rather hear from you and tell you it can wait than have you wait at home while something serious worsens.

What to Do Before You Reach Us

How you handle the first few minutes after a dental emergency can make a real difference in the outcome. Here's what to do for the most common situations:

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time matters here. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it gently with water but don't scrub it or remove any tissue attached to it. Try to place it back in the socket if you can. If that's not possible, keep it moist in milk or tuck it between your cheek and gums. Get to our office within 30 minutes if possible. The sooner we see you, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

Severe Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Use floss to gently clear anything that might be stuck between your teeth. Over-the-counter pain medication can help take the edge off while you're on your way in. Don't put aspirin directly on the gum tissue. That can burn it.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

Rinse with warm water to keep the area clean. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to manage swelling. If there's a sharp edge cutting into your lip or tongue, cover it with dental wax until you can get here.

Bleeding That Won't Stop

Apply firm pressure with a clean piece of gauze or cloth. If the bleeding continues for more than 15 to 20 minutes despite steady pressure, come in immediately or head to the nearest emergency room.

Dental Abscess

An abscess is an infection, and it can spread if it's not treated. Rinse with warm salt water for comfort. Don't try to pop it or drain it yourself. Get to our office as soon as you can.

How We Handle Dental Emergencies

When you call with an emergency, we don't put you in a queue. Our team works to get you in the same day, often within hours. Once you're in the chair, the first priority is getting your pain under control. Nobody should have to sit through an evaluation while they're in pain. We numb the area, manage your discomfort, and then figure out exactly what happened.

From there, your dentist examines the damage, takes any imaging needed, and explains what's going on and what needs to happen next. Some emergencies can be fully treated in that first visit. Others need a short-term fix to stabilize things, followed by a more complete treatment plan. Here's how we approach some of the most common emergency cases:

Toothaches: First thing we do is figure out what's causing the pain. It could be a cavity, an abscess, a crack, or a deeper issue. Once we know, we either fix it on the spot or map out a plan to get it taken care of.

Broken or Chipped Teeth: How we fix it depends on how bad the damage is. A small chip might just need bonding. A bigger break could call for a crown or veneer. If the crack goes deep enough to reach the nerve, a root canal usually needs to happen before we rebuild the tooth.

Knocked-Out Teeth: Time is critical here. If you get to us fast and the tooth is still in decent shape, there's a real chance we can put it back in. We stabilize it and keep a close eye on it as it heals.

Lost Restorations: When a crown, filling, or bridge falls out, the tooth underneath is completely exposed. We either reattach the original piece or put a temporary in place to protect it while your permanent restoration gets crafted.

Abscesses and Infections: An abscess means infection, and infection doesn't wait around. We drain it, prescribe antibiotics as needed, and determine the underlying cause. Whether that means a root canal, an extraction, or any other treatment depends on what we find.

Why Urgent Treatment Matters

Dental emergencies don't get better on their own. A cracked tooth can split further. An infection can spread into the bone or bloodstream. A knocked-out tooth loses viability by the minute. The longer you wait, the more limited your options become and the more expensive the fix gets.

Even if the pain seems to fade, that doesn't always mean the problem is gone. Sometimes the nerve dies, and the pain stops, but the infection underneath keeps spreading. Getting it checked early is generally a safer and smarter move.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Not every emergency can be avoided, but a few simple habits can lower your risk:

Wear A Mouthguard During Sports: Custom-fitted mouthguards generally offer better protection than over-the-counter ones.

Don't Use Your Teeth As Tools: Avoid using your teeth as tools for opening packages, tearing tape, or biting pen caps. Your teeth aren't built for that, and it's one of the easiest ways to crack one.

Stay on Top of Regular Checkups: A lot of emergencies start as small problems that could have been caught earlier. A tiny crack or early decay is a lot simpler to fix before it turns into an emergency.

Be Careful with Hard Foods: Avoid chewing on very hard foods or objects, including ice and unpopped popcorn kernels, which can damage teeth.
